About our team

The Airside Operations team is essential to the safe, efficient, and compliant functioning of one of the airport’s most dynamic environments. Easily recognised by their orange apparel, this team works tirelessly to maintain airside safety and ensure smooth coordination across multiple operational areas.

From runway inspections to aircraft stand planning, Airside Operations plays a hands-on role in keeping Leeds Bradford Airport running safely and effectively—often covering over 100 miles a day across the airfield during peak operational periods.

What we do

Key responsibilities include:

Ensuring full compliance with aviation safety regulations and proactively managing risks to protect passengers, aircraft, and staff.

Monitoring and maintaining runways, taxiways, and apron areas to keep them clear of hazards and fully operational.

Logging wildlife activity and using appropriate dispersal methods to reduce risks posed by birds and other species.

Allocating aircraft parking stands based on aircraft type, gate access, and operational needs. This complex task requires precision and coordination with ATC, terminal teams, airlines, and ground handlers.

Managing airfield habitats to maintain safety. Grass is kept at optimal lengths to deter hazardous wildlife, and foliage around signage and lighting is maintained to ensure visibility for pilots.

Coordinating snow clearance and runway contamination assessments. The designated “Snowman” leads these efforts, enabling accurate performance calculations for pilots.

Conducting aircraft turnaround audits and ensuring all stakeholders operate in line with the Aerodrome Manual. Issues are addressed through formal reporting channels or direct engagement with airlines.

Working closely with airlines, ground handling agents, and security teams to ensure seamless airside operations.
